Japan publishes guidelines allowing limited use of AI in schools (Japan Today) - Japan's Ministry of Education has released provisional guidelines permitting limited use of generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, in elementary, junior high, and high schools, while emphasizing caution, ethical considerations, and potential impacts on critical thinking and creativity. The guidelines will undergo revision based on trial results from selected schools, addressing concerns such as data privacy, copyright infringements, and the need for ethical education regarding AI usage.

Generative Artificial Intelligence in education: What are the opportunities and challenges? (UNESCO) UNESCO's new paper on generative AI and the future of education emphasizes the need for regulations and research to ensure AI tools are integrated into learning systems in a way that aligns with educational goals, warning against potential negative impacts on teachers, social interaction, and educational quality. The paper calls for the education sector to develop its own rules, increase investment in schools and teachers, and engage in coordinated efforts with regulatory branches of government to validate AI applications for formal use in schools.

AI Tech Headlines

ChatGPT in trouble: OpenAI sued for stealing everything anyone’s ever written on the Internet (FirstPost) The lawsuit against OpenAI alleges data theft due to the company's collection of diverse internet data without explicit user consent, but the outcome remains uncertain due to the complex nature of the internet and the broad licenses often granted to online platforms by users, which can limit individual claims for compensation.

Quote, Meme, or Joke about AI

Why was the generative AI failing in school?

Because every time the teacher asked for an essay, it generated a novel!

Why was the AI excused from the English class?

Because it had trouble understanding why people sometimes "literally can't even." It kept trying to complete the equation.
